Memorial Plaque to Commemorate the Victims of the USSR Repressive Institutions

At the initiative of the Latvian National Partisan Union, a special memorial plaque has been opened on the 4 Amatu iela building to commemorate the victims tortured and deceased in this building.

During the period of 1944 and up to the 70’s of the last century the military secret service institution “Smersh” and the Baltic Military District Special Department were located at 4 Amatu iela. The aforesaid USSR repressive institutions arrested, abased, tortured, killed and sent to exile for many years a large number of the Latvian national resistance movement participants.

The memorial plaque opening ceremony was attended by the Riga Mayor Jānis Birks, Saeima Deputy Juris Dobelis, European Parliament Deputy Inese Vaidere, representatives of the Latvian National Partisan Union and other interested people.
